«Siento por estos relatos algo muy especial, porque son fragmentos de mi propia vida: el desaparecido mundo de mi juventud en Budapest, bajo el estalinismo; aquellas figuras pintorescas, preparadas para sobrevivir, algunas de las cuales no me eran en absoluto ajenas; mi encuentro con la música de Wagner y con la literatura; el despertar de una gran aventura intelectual... y la súbita ruptura, simbolizada en el pasar de un jeep con la bandera inglesa. Cuando terminé de redactar estos relatos, tuve durante largo tiempo la sensación de que acababa de hacerme un regalo a mí mismo.»
