Mallarmé abordó el proyecto poético de Herodías en octubre de 1864; el 8 de septiembre de 1898, día anterior al de su muerte, trabajaba aún en el manuscrito de Las bodas de Herodías. Así se titulaba, en un segundo planteamiento, el poema inconcluso que atraviesa prácticamente la totalidad de su vida creativa. Con veintidós años concibió la que, pensaba, iba a ser su obra absoluta; aquella cuya palabra no llevase consigo sino la sensación de la materia nombrada.
