Lik y Lak viven en una tierra plana mucho más allá de nuestra Tierra, pero Sukhavati no es un planeta. Si vivieras allí «podrías andar eternamente sin volver jamás al lugar desde el que empezaste la caminata». En Sukhavati el tiempo apenas transcurre. La vida apenas transcurre. Cien años o mil años no son más que un soplo en la gran eternidad. Lik y Lak tienen una gran ilusión: visitar la Tierra, sobre la que su anciano amigo Oliver les cuenta historias maravillosas. Un día su deseo se cumple: Oliver ha preparado una bola de cristal en la que los dos niños podrán viajar a la Tierra. Pero no será sólo un viaje de placer, pues Oliver les pide algo muy importante: que hagan saber a las personas que viven allí lo maravillosa que es la vida.
