L'objectiu d02019;aquest estudi és explicar les dinàmiques socials, econòmiques i polítiques que afecten Catalunya, amb especial interès pels efectes que comporten sobre l'economia catalana les diferents guerres, conflictes i tensions que pateix Europa i el Mediterrani entre 1516 i 1640. I, un cop establertes les línies bàsiques de l'evolució econòmica, el llibre intenta aportar elements que ajudin a mostrar les interdependències entre demografia, economia i política en les relacions de Catalunya amb Castella i el Mediterrani (els principals espais econòmics i geogràfics amb els que s'interrelaciona) i amb la monarquia hispànica (l'àmbit politic en el que es mou).
