Les havaneres ?o cançons americanes, que és com se les coneixia? neixen a la Cuba del segle XIX. Els Països Catalans van tenir amb l?illa cubana la primera pàtria d?Amèrica i la seva música va arribar al continent mariner des de l?Empordà al Baix Segura.
Des del 1967, a Calella de Palafrugell van començar els festivals d?havaneres, així com al 1955 havien començat a Torrevella. El llibre és un viatge d?emocions de La bella Lola a El meu avi, de La paloma a La gavina, i un recorregut pels compositors cubans com Sebastián Iradier (1809-1865) i els empordanesos Manuel Saumell (1817-1870), Ernest Morató (1895-1990) i Salvador Dabau (1902-2002) o Josep-Lluís Ortega Monasterio (1918-2004).
