Por la amplitud de su obra y por el carácter provocador de la misma, Rainer Wermer Fassbinder (1945-1982) dominó la escena cinematográfica de los años 70. Desde «Las amargas lágrimas de Petra von Kant» a «Querelle», pasando por «Berlin Alexanderplatz» o «El matrimonio de María Braun», realizó más de cuarenta largometrajes en menos de quince años, y lo hizo creando su propio grupo de cine y de teatro, rodeándose de una serie de colaboradores, como Ingrid Caven o Hanna Schygulla, que mantuvo junto a él durante muchos años. El autor del libro confronta aquí la biografía de Fassbinder y la Historia, la vida y la obra, las pasiones destructoras y la denuncia feroz al Estado, las fuerzas oscuras del deseo y la obsesión por los fantasmas del nazismo.
