En 1911, Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, partiendo de Berlín, realiza, por Bohemia, Serbia, Rumania, Bulgaria y Turquía, regresando por Grecia e Italia, el viaje decisivo para la formación de las concepciones estéticas y teóricas que desarrollará bajo el nombre de Le Corbusier. En ese viaje aprende "a mirar y a ver", y la arquitectura se le revela, así lo expresará poco después, como el "juego sabio, correcto y magnífico de los volúmenes bajo la luz".
Será ya al final de su carrera, al cabo de más de cincuenta años, que Le Corbusier establecerá el texto definitivo sobre ese viaje trascendental.
