Reflexa l''esperit d''una singular població a l?Antic Règim, la vila de Perpinyà al llindà del segle XVIII. A banda de copsar el devenir de la societat i l?economia perpinyaneses, és una font única per mostrar-nos el tractament de la llengua catalana sota la corona borbònica francesa. A partir del 1700, Lluís XIV promulgava un edicte obligant a què la producció notarial de la Catalunya del Nord fos redactada exclusivament en francès. Això va significar l''eliminació de les dues llengües que els notaris catalans sempre havien usat, tant al Rosselló, el Conflent o a l?Alta Cerdanya, el llatí i el català.
