El principal de todos es el de la fidelidad al título: autores modernistas. Hemos optado por un criterio amplio y así hemos incluido a algunos autores que en un análisis más riguroso habrían quedado fuera. Hemos pretendido también que la selección de los cuentos permita ver la evolución del cuento moderno, desde la sencillez de las narraciones de José Martí a la complejidad y perfección de Unamuno o Valle-Inclán.
