Al regresar a España en 1833, trae consigo las ideas y las formas de la nueva literatura. La aparición de sus Poesías (1840), que incluye sus versos líricos y El estudiante de Salamanca, fue y sigue siendo un momento culminante de esa tendencia que, con su rebeldía y originalidad, marca el origen del arte contemporáneo.
