Las antiguas pintadas sobre las piedras del yacimiento arqueológico de Sakkara, en las afueras de El Cairo, indican que los visitantes admiran las maravillas del país desde hace más de tres milenios. En uno de los primeros ejemplos de literatura de viajes, redactado unos 450 años antes de Cristo, el geógrafo griego Herodoto (484-424 a.C.) remarcaba que: "En ningún otro lugar hay tantos prodigios ni se pueden ver tantas obras de grandeza indescriptible."
