Es autor de Álbum de familia, libro con el que obtuvo el premio "Poeta Joven del Perú" (1971), El huso de la palabra (1989), Historia natural (1994), Cosas del cuerpo (1999) y Habitó entre nosotros (2002). En 1997 White Adder Press publicó en Edimburgo una antología bilingüe de sus poemas titulada Path Through the Canefields, y en el 2000 la editorial colombiana Norma publicó la antología El guardián del hielo. Ese mismo año, el grupo teatral Yuyachkani puso en escena su versión libre de la tragedia Antígona de Sófocles.
