L'acompanya en el viatge la seva esposa, així com els seus fills i una neboda. Però el destí reserva als il·lusionats viatgers una llarga successió de desgràcies i penúries de tota mena, i el que s'anunciava com un viatge a una terra de promissió esdevé un terrible malson. La barraca africana va ser publicada en francès l'any 1824 i d'aleshores ençà no havia estat reeditada ni traduïda a cap altre idioma.
