CÁNOVAS personifica la España de la Restauración, de la que fue forjador y mantenedor. Escrito en el mismo tono casi caricaturesco que es común a esta «Serie final», Madrid y sus gentes, mezclándose a una Historia que es casi ya presente, sirven de fondo en esta ocasión a la silueta del fino político malagueño y a los acontecimientos de los primeros tiempos del reinado de Alfonso XII.
