En esta recopilación de leyendas y mitos populares, la literatura oriental está representada por " Ramayana " , " Mahabarata " y las " Mil y una noches " . Del mundo griego clásico encontramos a los protagonistas de la " Ilíada " ; y de la épica medieval, a los tres héroes más conocidos de las tradiciones española, francesa y germánica: el Cid, Roldán y Sigfrido. De los libros de caballerías figuran dos de sus más bellas leyendas: las de Tristán e Iseo y la del valiente Lohengrin. Por último, como muestra de las literaturas primitivas escandinavas tenemos a Balder; y la lucha de los hombres de las montañas suizas frente a la tiranía está representada por el personaje de Guillermo Tell. Al comienzo de la obra, Casona nos ofrece el texto quizá más original: su interpretación personal de la muerte y el nacimiento de Cristo.
