The story begins by introducing the main character, a 16th- century student born in Valladolid, within the typical setting of the period, (gangs of rogues, social unrest, the Moriscoes being expelled, the religious conflicts, the warrior and knightly idealism of the first Renaissance02026;.). Iñigo de Alonso, as he is called, pushed on by Destiny and by his need for adventures and new experience, sets sail for the Holy Land. During the voyage, he comes across a war ship that is recruiting soldiers for the Holy League to fight against the Turkish Empire. Iñigo joins this army and fights in the Battle of Lepanto next to Cervantes, and they are banished together. It is a curious mixture of a historical novel and an adventure novel. As a historical novel, the author does an excellent job of recreating the atmosphere of a period in the past and of interpreting part of the figure and the work of Cervantes. As an adventure novel, she offers us a theme that is typical of this type of book: As Iñigo stands on the threshold to adulthood, his childhood dreams of glory and adventure mature as he faces the pain and suffering of the immediate situation. He goes from being a "student" to being an adult.
