Esta antología de textos medievales, que abarca desde las fuentes clásicas (Aristóteles, Ovidio, Juvenal o la Biblia), pasando por una selección de la literatura europea (Boccaccio, Andreas Capellanus, Petrarca o Christine de Pizan) y que continúa con los textos hispánicos más importantes (algunos muy conocidos y otros no tanto), pone de manifiesto las ideas de los escritores sobre la mujer. Y aunque frecuentemente se supone que la actitud medieval, en general, era misógina, sorprende que los textos aquí representados pertenezcan casi en la misma proporción a otra tradición, paralela a la misoginia, que es la de la defensa de las mujeres.
