Nada se mueve en la señoría de Orsenna. La otrora capital de un imperio pujante es ahora una ciudad dormida, carcomida por la inercia. Un joven patricio, Aldo, es enviado a la ribera de las Sirtes para vigilar a las tropas acantonadas. Más allá del mar, la última frontera, están las costas de un ignoto país con el que la señoría mantiene una guerra de tres siglos, tan aletargada como los propios contendientes. Con la llegada de Aldo, todo empieza a dar señales de vida, y el entusiasmo vital desequilibra el juego de fuerzas sobre el que se sustenta la paz.
