La princesa Violant viu en un castell en ruïnes amb el seu pare, el rei, i la seva mare, la reina, que no paren de repetir-li: «Que no se t’oblidi que ets una princesa!». Però un dia la família reial, arruïnada, s’ha de mudar i s’instal·la en un petit apartament sorollós. Allà la Violant descobreix una cosa sorprenent: cada matí, tots els nens i nenes entren en un gran edifici envoltat per una tanca, i hores després... en surten la mar de contents! Quin edifici és aquest i què hi fan els nens a dins? La Violant vol anar-hi i esbrinar-ho. Però primer haurà de convèncer els pares, el rei i la reina, i això... no serà tan fàcil!
