«Dichtung und Wahrheit» vio la luz originalmente dentro de Homage to Clio (1960), a modo de interludio entre dos secciones de poemas en verso. Auden lo había escrito meses antes, en el verano de 1959, durante su estancia en su casa de campo en Kirchstetten, Austria.
