En Klaus es desperta a Boston, confús i desorientat. El cos li pesa, la memòria li falla i depèn de la cura d’en Yasu, un desconegut que sembla saber més del que diu. Al mateix temps, en una platja del sud de França apareix la Jane, envoltada de sorra cremada. Conserva els records d’una vida adulta, però la seva ment madura habita un cos de nena que fluctua de manera imprevisible. Tots tres es troben ara en una realitat inestable. Les agulles dels rellotges s’afanyen i frenen. Els errors es repeteixen. Les pèrdues també.
