José de Cadalso es una de las figuras literarias más importantes del siglo XVIII. Su historia amorosa, su activo patriotismo, su atrevimiento crítico lo convierten en una figura imprescindible del (pre) romanticismo español. Las "Cartas marruecas" (1774) son una novela social en la que los personajes se enfrentan con la desesperante realidad española y proponen soluciones atractivas pero demasiado idealistas. Es notablemente moderna la representación realista de la sociedad en las "Cartas marruecas". En las "Noches lúgubres" (1771), escritas tres años antes, tenemos la primera obra romántica europea, el libro con el que se inaugura la literatura romántica del suicidio, y el primer poema en prosa de la literatura española. Ambas obras de Cadalso se editan partiendo del cotejo de los mejores manuscritos y ediciones antiguas.
