Un evocador estudio sobre el imaginario que rodea a las nubes en la historia de la mística medieval y su influencia en el arte moderno.
Mirar las nubes. Imaginar. ¿Quién no ha visto formarse en ellas extrañas figuras, rostros o animales monstruosos que se van deshaciendo para generar otras formas nuevas? Las nubes han sido siempre un «soporte elemental», como decía André Breton, que ha estimulado la imaginación.
En la Edad Media formaban parte de las imágenes negativas, junto a las tinieblas o la noche, porque impedían ver a Dios; eran una invisibilidad que expresaba la supraesencialidad divina más allá de toda afirmación reductiva. En la modernidad, las nubes, esas «maravillosas nubes» en el verso de Baudelaire, han continuado incitando nuestras facultades visionarias y creando imágenes fantásticas, según puede apreciarse en textos como el de Thomas de Quincey. Los estudios sobre ellas en el paisajismo de los siglos XIX y XX resultan fascinantes, tanto como en los análisis meteorológicos; manchas que encontramos en la historia del arte, desde las obras de Meister Francke o Andrea Mantegna en el siglo XV, hasta las de Johann Georg von Dillis, Eugène Boudin o André Kertész.
