Escrita durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, La serpiente se ambienta en una Suecia nerviosamente neutral y en alerta militar. Dagerman, un recluta del Ejército y anarcosindicalista, utiliza el día a día del servicio militar como telón de fondo para explorar la justicia social y la psicología del miedo.
La primera parte del libro trata sobre una joven que trabaja en un campamento militar y se siente atraída por un soldado sádico. En la segunda parte se exponen las experiencias angustiosas del álter ego de Dagerman, Scriver, y de sus compañeros reclutas. En el último capítulo, Scriver expone su visión sobre cómo vencer el miedo con un final absurdo y desastroso.
