Erasmo de Rotterdam supo reconocer la importancia de los que se labraron en la Antigüedad y quiso recopilarlos para explicarlos en pocas páginas. Sin embargo, su objetivo último no era tanto elucidarlos cuanto transmitir las numerosas enseñanzas religiosas, políticas y sobre todo morales que en ellos se compendian. Era muy consciente de que su sentido último podía haberse borrado con el paso de los siglos, pero también de que su correcta actualización les dotaría de un alcance amplio, de modo que volvieran a ser comprensibles para el vulgo, tantas veces pervertido por las mentes supuestamente más doctas y preclaras.
