El comte Arnau ha estat una de les figures més arrelades de l’imaginari popular català durant segles i encara ho continua sent en l’actualitat. El 1926, ara fa cent anys, Josep Ribot rebia el premi Llegendari Popular Català per les llegendes que havia anat recollint pel Ripollès. Juntament amb l’etnògraf Rossend Serra i Pagès, feia anys que volien fer un llibre sobre el comte Arnau. Ribot va fer estades a Montgrony des d’on va dibuixar les terres per on es movia el nostre comte. Dibuixava l’escenografia de la llegenda mentre recollia les cançons tal com les recitava la gent de Mataplana. Aquell mateix any Rossend Serra publicava un assaig sobre els orígens de la llegenda. Segurament el llibre que teniu a les mans s’assembla força al que van voler fer, fa un segle, Josep Ribot i Rossend Serra i ens acosta a la llegenda del comte Arnau, més genuïna, tal com es recordava i es repetia.
