Una mañana de octubre de 1988, un misterioso señor de Leiden se presenta ante Pieter Waterdrinker con una propuesta de lo más inusual: introducir de contrabando siete mil biblias en la Unión Soviética. Pieter aceptará —¿qué otra cosa podía hacer?—, y muy pronto se encontrará viviendo en primera persona una de las mayores revoluciones sociales y culturales de nuestro tiempo, trabajando como operador turístico... con una línea alternativa de negocio dedicada al contrabando. Durante los siguientes treinta años de su vida, Pieter será testimonio, y parte muy activa, de algunos de los grandes cambios que moldearon Rusia en el país que hoy conocemos. Una perfecta oda al alma dividida de Rusia y un relato imprescindible de las luchas del autor con la vida, la literatura y el amor.
