La industrialització va ser un canvi radical en el sistema productiu i de subsistència, però també en les condicions de vida dels ciutadans. Catalunya, una de les nacions pioneres en aquest procés, diferenciada respecte a la resta de l’Estat espanyol, va millorar en tots els indicadors de benestar en comparació amb els països de base agrària, i es convertí en el més important receptor d’immigrants d’Europa. Per valorar-ho, només cal quantificar paràmetres com l’evolució demogràfica (mortalitat, esperança de vida, immigració), epidemiologia (malalties), alimentació, antropologia biològica, educació, habitatge, higiene o vida laboral, entre d’altres. Aquest llibre és particularment oportú en un moment com l’actual, en què es vol reescriure la història a base de sensacions i emocions sense coneixements empírics sòlids i multidisciplinaris i en què es posa en dubte el caràcter progressista de la industrialització.
