Tres personajes se ponen en marcha un desapacible día de invierno: un mercader, su criado y un caballo. Al mercader le guía el deseo de acumular fortuna: hay un bosquecillo en venta y no quiere que nadie se le adelante. El criado y el caballo viajan simplemente a donde les lleva su destino. Pero el camino está cubierto de nieve, se pierden, el frío y la oscuridad se ciernen sobre ellos. Deben aunar fuerzas para sobrevivir y no todos tienen el mismo sentido de la solidaridad.
