Buscando el rastro de su padre fallecido, la narradora nos guía por las calles y la historia de esta ciudad. La acompañamos en su recorrido, desde playas rebosantes de oro e iglesias hasta las catacumbas que antaño fueron el reino del inframundo. Cita chistes, anuncios de periódicos locales y conversaciones con residentes de Odesa. Recorre su camino por mercados, oficinas, cementerios y archivos eclesiásticos. El resultado es un retrato de Odesa antes de que la historia volviera a arrasar la ciudad y transformara su fisonomía.
