Els seus personatges extravagants i crèduls observen com la realitat s’embolica fins a l’absurd i els contrasentits i les enganyifes se surten amb la seva. El periodista que no sap un borrall de la feina que fa, els ginys que atrauen allò de què suposadament protegeixen, la síndria que cura tots els mals, els mecanismes beneits per assolir la fama... Twain mira descarnadament els fets humans i exposa, amb humor de geni, una societat feta d’ignorància i arbitrarietat. Res que ens quedi gaire lluny.
