Un elegante caballero neoyorquino llamado John Durham llega a París con la intención de pedir en matrimonio a su amiga de la infancia Fanny Frisbee, que ahora es ya toda una mujer acostumbrada a la sofisticación del Viejo Continente. Aunque ambos están muy enamorados, su plan se enfrenta a un grave impedimento: Fanny está separada (pero no divorciada) del marqués de Malrive, un aristócrata disoluto que se niega a concederle el divorcio para evitar el escándalo, y que incluso está dispuesto a retirarle la custodia del hijo de ambos. Durham, resolutivo y directo, pide ayuda a la cuñada de Fanny, la enigmática Madame de Treymes, que se muestra dispuesta a interceder por ellos, pero a su manera.
