Los medlevingios son un pequeño pueblo parecido a los hobbits. Antiguamente vivían con los humanos pero, en algún momento, éstos se volvieron demasiado estridentes, codiciosos y violentos, y los medlevingios decidieron irse a vivir a otro mundo.
El túnel que conecta ambos mundos desemboca en el patio trasero de un edificio junto al puerto de Hamburgo, pero no se ha usado durante generaciones. Hasta que dos niños medlevingios, Nis y Moa, se atreven a entrar en el túnel para llegar al mundo de los humanos. Allí se encontrarán con Johannes, un humano de doce años, que les ayudará a resolver el secreto del abecedario de plata.
