La historia moderna de España desde el siglo XV, y por supuesto su arte, son inexplicables sin su estrecha y prolongada relación con los Países Bajos, cuyos artistas durante siglos, no sólo viajaron y, a veces, se fincaron en la Península Ibérica, sino que sirvieron de modelo y estímulo constantes para los creadores locales, los cuales también visitaron las principales ciudades flamencas. Con razón, por tanto, nadie discute que las dos fuentes que explican la génesis y el desarrollo de la Escuela Española sean siempre Flandes e Italia.
