Aquesta publicació recull el treball d'un grup de joves arqueòlegs de la Univers itat de Girona per conèixer el passat que s'amaga en el barri del Mercadal i que fou motiu d'una exposició al Museu d'Història de la Ciutat de Girona el 2006. L' excavació de Santa Caterina és segurament l'extensió més gran que s'ha excava ma i al nucli urbà de Girona i permet explicar la vida del barri del Mercadal des d e gairebé els seus inicis, cap a l'any 1000, quan era una zona de camps i hortes ben regada, fins al moment en què es converteix en una zona privilegiada al seg le XIII.
