Este volumen se propone presentar el panorama de la literatura hispanoamericana del siglo XX con posterioridad al Modernismo. Este siglo ofrece una enorme riqueza y fecundidad en todos sus géneros, que, precisamente, vertebran la estructura de la obra: narrativa, poesía, ensayo y teatro. En el caso de los dos primeros, narrativa y poesía, se atiende a dos vertientes: a sus líneas de desarrollo, corrientes o tendencias y a las trayectorias específicas y particulares por áreas culturales o nacionales. El ensayo y el teatro se ofrecen como exhaustivas monografías sobre sus respectivas materias.
