En aquesta obra trobarem una de les històries evolutives més interessants que podem trobar dins el món animal com és ara la de les ratapinyades. Descobrirem les diferents adaptacions que han sofert per poder volar, particularitat que no presenta cap altre grup de mamífers. A més, la majoria de les ratapinyades han substituït el sentit de la vista per un sofisticat sistema de sonar. Per què han sofert aquestes grans modificacions? Les ratapinyades són uns animals populars, coneguts per tothom, però, realment, què sabem de la seva manera de viure? Com es reprodueixen? De què s?alimenten? On viuen? Quins hàbitats diferents ocupen? A més de satisfer aquestes preguntes, el volum ens informa de quines són les espècies de ratapinyades que podem trobar a les illes Balears, on ja vivien abans que s?hi establissin els humans.
