Finalista del Premio de Novela Biblioteca Breve Seix Barral en 1959, «Eloy» recibió dos votos contra tres en la última deliberación. Publicado por primera vez en 1960, y después de ser traducido a varios idiomas, el libro vuelve a circular en España en la edición definitiva que le dio su autor, quien lo terminó de reescribir, exiliado en Suiza, el año 1982.
