Aurora Bertrana va viure la Segona Guerra Mundial a Ginebra, rodejada de refugiats de tot Europa que fugien del feixisme. El 1945, ja firmat l’Armistici, va acompanyar una missió humanitària al poble francès d’Étobon, que s'havia quedat sense homes després que fossin afusellats pels nazis en represàlies a una acció del maquis. És allà on neix la novel·la.
