Trieste és una ciutat-idea. Amb aquesta premissa, el present volum fa un recorregut per la seva literatura i la seva història durant el segle xx. Hi trobarem escriptors i personatges emblemàtics, com ara Svevo, Stuparich, Slataper, Saba, Joyce, Pittoni, Magris, Pahor, Bazlen o Basaglia. D’una manera o altra, tots han escrit conscients que trepitjaven una terra de frontera en la qual el nihilisme procedent de Mitteleuropa conflueix amb el mar. Una línia insegura —ara llatina, ara germànica, ara eslava— que ha marcat l’obra d’aquests autors, admirada per lectors d’arreu. Aquest assaig reflexiona sobre la triestinità i els motius pels quals una ciutat més aviat petita esdevé una veritable capital europea de la literatura contemporània.
