Pese a que hay numerosas biografías históricas de algunos de sus miembros más reconocidos (Fernando el Católico, Alfonso el Magnánimo o Juan II de Aragón) faltaba una obra decisiva que recogiera toda la trayectoria de la familia Trastámara, de origen bastardo, desde Enrique II hasta Fernando el Católico. Ernest Belenguer ha realizado la investigación más amplia y definitiva de su carrera analizando las vicisitudes y consecuciones de los distintos reyes de Aragón (y Castilla) pertenecientes a este linaje y sacando a la luz sus fijaciones comunes y debilidades compartidas.
