Muchos de sus ritos y símbolostienen su origen en las antiguas celebraciones del solsticio de invierno, la noche más larga del año, para dar la bienvenida al nuevo ciclo de la luz y de la vida. Esas celebraciones han ido evolucionando, desde el Paleolítico, la Antigua Grecia o el Imperio Romano hasta nuestros días, y han dado lugar, entre otras, a la fiesta de Navidad que hoy conocemos.
