Vuelven a aparecer los temas del amor como «creación ficticia» y de las ambiguas conexiones entre sensibilidad y memoria, pero esta vez en un marco histórico determinado por el furor antisemita que produjo el caso Dreyfus. El temible cronista de sociedad que siempre fue Proust despliega aquí la herencia balzaquiana en todo su esplendor e impregna incluso la representación compasiva de la intimidad y el dolor.
