Yannis Ritsos (Monembasia, Peloponeso, 1909- Atenas, 1990) es uno de los grandes poetas que durante el siglo xx poblaron la literatura griega. Desde joven militó en el Partido Comunista Griego. Este compromiso político lo mantiene en su obra literaria desde sus primeros escritos, y fue causa de diversos encarcelamientos, destierros, etc. En 1966 publica Grecidad, un canto a la resistencia que toda Grecia está sufriendo con la invasión nazi, y que Mikis Theodorakis musicalizará. En 1974, con la caída de la Dictadura de los Coroneles, Ritsos quedó definitivamente en libertad. En 1977 recibió el Premio Lenin de la Paz.
