A final del segle XVII, quan la submissió obligada de les dones les allunyava de l'educació, les idees d'aquest bisbe trencaven l'obscurantisme pedagògic i obrien un panorama que es pot qualificar de pragmàtic: ell no pretén canviar el rol social de les dones, però busca que aquest rol es dugui a terme amb la màxima instrucció possible. A partir dels seus textos, en traducció de Carles Miró, el pedagog Enric Prats destaca el paper fonamental de Fénelon en la transició cap a una pedagogia moderna.
