El llibre és fruit de la jornada acadèmica d’homenatge al gran historiador Josep Fontana i Lázaro celebrada a la Universitat Pompeu Fabra el 19 de novembre de 2018. Està dividit en tres apartats. El primer, dedicat a la tasca d’historiador de Fontana; el segon se centra en l’anàlisi d’algunes de les seves principals obres i el darrer en el reconeixement del seu mestratge. Les trenta-tres col·laboracions del llibre per part d ´historiadors i historiadores posen en relleu l ´abast de la seva tasca, tant historiogràfica com de mestratge i de compromís cívic, alhora que demostren el llegat extraordinàriament ric i sòlid de Josep Fontana, un dels millors historiadors del nostre país.
