Amèrica es diu «Amèrica» per culpa d’un embull de mil dimonis fet de casualitats, errors i malentesos: la història d’un home, Amerigo Vespucci, qui, per un viatge que no havia fet mai ni mai va afirmar que hagués fet, va assolir la immensa glòria que el seu nom arribés a ser el d’un continent. Alguns han absolt Vespucci d’haver usurpat aquest honor, d’altres l’han condemnat a la vergonya eterna. En quin dels dos camps hi ha la veritat o, diguem-ho amb més cautela, la màxima versemblança?
Stefan Zweig, poeta, dramaturg, novel·lista, assagista i biògraf nascut a Viena el 1881. És un dels més grans escriptors del segle XX. Exiliat al Brasil, va morir a Petrópolis el 1942. De la seva extensa obra, a Edicions de 1984 hem publicat El viatge al passat i Els prodigis de la vida.
