Empès en part per la motivació econòmica que li ofereix Greenleaf i en part per fugir de possibles problemes legals que el persegueixen als Estats Units, Ripley no dubta a desplaçar-se fins a la costa italiana i localitzar Dickie i la seva amiga Marge Sherwood.
