Saki (pseudònim d’Hector H. Munro) va tenir una vida digna de ser reproduïda en qualsevol dels seus contes, amb un avantpassat que perd la vida devorat per un tigre, una mare que mor envestida per una vaca, i ell mateix assassinat per un franctirador alemany durant la Primera Guerra Mundial, tot just després d’aixecar el cap per renyar un soldat al crit d’«apaga la maleïda cigarreta!». No va tastar la glòria en vida, però avui se’l considera un dels pares literaris de l’humor anglès, i va ser llegit amb devoció per autors com Borges, Chesterton o Tom Sharpe. Amb Saki és impossible no somriure.
