Escuadra hacia la muerte, una pieza fundamental del teatro español del siglo xx, es la obra primeriza de «un veinteañero que aun no había terminado el servicio militar» llamado Alfonso Sastre. Ambientada en Rusia durante una supuesta Tercera Guerra Mundial, narra las tribulaciones de una escuadra militar que es enviada al frente. Estrenada en 1953, y celebrada de inmediato, Escuadra hacia la muerte es señalada, acusada de antimilitarismo por el Alto Estado Mayor del Ejército español, y prohibida, aunque esto no impidió que en los años más duros de la dictadura fuera representada cientos de veces. Pepitas presenta ahora la edición que el autor consideró definitiva, acompañada de algunos documentos esenciales.
